Ireland, 13 Jan 2011 – Ireland now recognises same-sex relationships from 27 other States. The Civil Partnership and Certain Rights of Cohabitants Act 2010 entered into force on January 2011. The 4^th of January was the first day on which same-sex couples have been able to register their interest in civil partnerships in Ireland. Whilst the first Irish Civil Partnerships will take place in April due to a three month notice requirement, the Irish Government has passed a Statutory Instrument providing that same-sex couples who have entered one of the specified legal relationships from other jurisdictions will be automatically deemed to be civil partners in Ireland and will be subject to the rights and obligations specified in the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights of Cohabitants Act 2010. The relationships which are recognised as civil partnerships are:
