A Chilean senator (Fulvio Rossi), the head of Chile's Socialist party, is planning to present a proposal to legalize gay marriage in Chile.

Lately the neighboring Argentina approved a bill that legalizes gay marriage and gay adoptions. Chilean politicians are already considering the Acuerdo de Vida en Comun (AVC), which would act as a civil union available to both heterosexual and homosexual couples. In fact Sebastian Pinera, Chile's first conservative president in two decades, has voted to guarantee more rights to same-sex couples, but opposes gay marriage.
The Argentinian example actually is very important, because in Chile as well the Church opposes to Rossi's proposal and it is also expected to meet some resistance in Congress. Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz, the archbishop of Santiago, said:“It may be that two people, two men or two women, want to live together and share life, but to call that marriage is an aberration". In relation to that, Mr Rossi called on the church to "be more welcoming".

Also in Uruguay and Paraguay gay groups are pushing for parliaments to consider the posibility to give gay couples equal marriage rights. Uruguay is the most likely of the two countries to grant equal marriage rights. It already allows civil unions, adoption rights for gay couples, the right for gay people to serve openly in the military corps and grants transexual people the gender reassignment. In fact the gay rights group SOMOSGAY announced that they will lobby for the approval of a gay marriage bill in October.
