Nepal census recognizes third gender for the first time

Nepal, 15 August 2011 – [Repost from UNDP website] Nepal has just completed its first national census that officially includes a third option in the gender categories that citizens can select, opening the way for stronger recognition of sexual and gender minority rights in provision of public services.

Dublin, Ireland 19 Apr 2011 - Louise Hannon, is the first transgender worker to sucessfully rely upon the Employment Equality Act for discrimination on grounds of transsexualism. The Equality Tribunal awarded €35,422.71 in compensaton having found that she was discriminated against on the basis of gender and disability.

European Convention on Violence against Women to include Protection for Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Women

6 April 2011 - The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe announced that it has adopted a new convention to protect women from violence on 6 April 2011 which will expressly include violence on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Convention will now be opened for signature in May, and will come into force when ratified by 10 member states.
